There are high quality chess boards, hand made ones, custom made ones, boards made of exotic wood that weight heavily on your hand, light weight ones that you can easily carry for your vacation. Once you decide on an expensive board you will have to spend an equal amount of time searching for the best figurines. The way they are crafted adds to the total cost of the set. Look closely at the knights before you buy the figurines. About 50% of the sum total costs of the chessmen are gobbled up the knights. The finer the quality the higher the price is. Look at the way they turn, twist and jump – if they move about royally, it is worth the money you are putting into them. Observe the King. Does he look aristocratic enough? If he looks like a real king, all strutted up and fine, it will add to the total cost.
